Drinking Like a Sailor: 3 Classic Sailor Drinks You Need to Try

After a harrowing day at sea, there was nothing better than a ration of rum aboard Royal Navy ships. Pusser's Rum is bottled companionship. Our history says it all.

Though most of us aren't living on ships, we're going through our own rough times in 2020. Try these sailor drinks for your next cocktail if you'd like a liquid pick-me-up.

Rum provided to sailors was high proof. Of course, sailors drank it straight, but others pioneered the first rum cocktail recipes. We have sailors to thank for these timeless cocktails.

Dark 'n' Stormy: One of The Staple Sailor Drinks

From the Bermuda Triangle, this drink was made when the Royal Navy cut rum with ginger beer to discourage drunkenness on board.

Imagine the wind blowing cutting gales, the sky opening up above, and your threadbare clothing snapping in the ocean spray. The Dark and Stormy embodies the delight of the oncoming storm and preparation for the hardships ahead.

What you'll need:

  • 2 ounces Pusser's Rum
  • 1/2 ounce fresh-squeezed lime
  • Ginger beer, as needed
  • Lime wedge

You can add the rum to the ice or pour it on top after the ginger beer and watch the storm brew from the glass. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream if you're in for something sweet. Sailors certainly didn't have that luxury, though.

Planter's Punch: The Versatile Mix

This delightful rum cocktail comes from Jamaica in the mid-1800s. Rum punch was a classic for sailors experimenting with flavor and rum dilution. Every geographic area had its own special concoction, so feel free to add your own flair to this recipe.

You'll need:

  • 3 ounces of Pusser's Rum
  • 3/4 ounce of fresh-squeezed lime
  • 1 ounce of simple syrup, or sugar
  • 1 dash of grenadine
  • 3 dashes of bitters
  • Crushed ice

This drink can take on a new life with the right bitters.

Frozen Piña Colada: Legendary Fun

Though Pusser's Rum has its history with the Royal Navy, rum was enjoyed by all kinds of sailors. Even the nefarious kind.

Yes. Pirates.

Legend has it that the piña colada was invented by Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí to keep his men happy and prevent mutiny. Did he know he would invent one of the best rum cocktail recipes of all time?

You'll need:

  • 3 ounces of Pusser's Rum
  • Frozen pineapple chunks
  • 5 ounces of coconut milk

Pull that blender out, because you're ready to set sail. Garnish with anything from cherries to oranges.

This tastes best when the rum is added to the top at the end. Your drink will look like it has a rum oasis on top of a frozen pineapple desert. And that's exactly where you want to be.

Get on Board!

Now you know of the classic sailor drinks, their legends passed down through the ages. They were all born from the ingenuity of sailors on the high seas. You can craft the next timeless concoction while preventing infection from your COVID-19 hideaway.

Pusser's Rum has a collection of rums to sip on the rocks, off the rocks, or in one of these three rum cocktails. We've won World Rum awards, but don't take their word for it. See for yourself what 300 years of tradition tastes like.
