Mai Tai Punch With Dark Rum

The short answer to whether you can make a Mai Tai Punch with dark rum is: Yes. Dark rum is often a key ingredient in all Mai Tai Punches, so if you have some lying around, you're good to go. White rum fits well too.

Most recipes will tell you that you'll need multiple types of rum to really round out the flavor. While this definitely gives you a complex Mai Tai Punch, it's not the end of the world if you only have dark rum lying around.

Besides, if you're partial to dark rum over gold or light rum, this might even be a benefit. However, you do need other ingredients to really make it a Mai Tai Punch.

Things You Need for Mai Tai Cocktail

If you've got your Pusser's rum, you're only about a quarter of the way to a true Mai Tai cocktail. You need about one and one-half ounces of rum to start.

Get yourself a bottle of triple sec if you don't have it yet, as well as other sweet liqueurs like amaretto. You can also get orange curacao. Whatever you use, have three-fourths of an ounce ready.

You'll also need some lime juice to round it all out, about three-fourths of an ounce. If you're making a Mai Tail party punch for a big group, you'll also benefit from a few cups of pineapple or orange juice.

If you don't have any amaretto or other sweet liqueurs, you can also use syrup to give it that sweet flavor. Pineapple or orange juice are also other key replacements. Start with three-fourths of an ounce of each.

How to Make a Mai Tai Punch

Gathering all the ingredients for a Mai Tai Punch is really half the battle. Once you've got it all laid out, the next part is just putting everything together.

Get your rum, liqueur, optional juice, and lime together into a cocktail shaker with some ice in it. Strain it into a glass with ice, and don't be afraid to top it off with some more rum on top.

If you're making it in a large pitcher, you'll just add all your ingredients to your serving vessel and adjust all the flavors as needed. This means adding more syrup, juice, or other ingredients. You should also serve with ice.
