Tell us about yourself.

My name is Stephen Ramos and I am honored to be this month’s Bartender on Deck! You will usually catch me travelling the states with my band Hearts Like Lions but I call Long Beach, CA my home. Music and photography are my biggest passions outside of this industry. I shoot photos for tons of brands and run social media for a few small businesses here in Long Beach (The Exhibition Room/Ten Mile Brewing being two). Over the course of 5 years I’ve slowly dove deeper into the world of alcohol in general. From craft beer all the way to craft spirits! I started taking photos for cocktail bars around and then turned that into being behind the bar and creating my own bar at home.

Favorite Pusser’s Rum cocktail and recipe?

My favorite Pusser’s Rum cocktail hands down is the Painkiller. I like to stretch things and try to get creative a bit when it comes to making drinks. There are tons of variations you can do with this particular drink, so here’s a twist on this classic Pusser’s Rum cocktail! I wanted to do something that would add a little kick to it and bring in a different fruit component.

“A Kick to the Coconuts”
2-ounces Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum
4-ounces Pineapple Juice
1-ounces Mango Juice
1-ounce Cream Of Coconut
1 Pinch Of Cayenne

Build ingredients in a cocktail shaker with just a little ice and vigorously shake. Strain into your drinking vessel (preferably your badass tiki mug) with crushed ice. The reason I shake with light ice is so the drink does not get watered down. Let the crushed ice do that for you.

Why are you a fan of Pusser’s?

A dear friend of mine introduced me to Pusser’s Rum about 2 years ago. I just love everything about the brand. They have such an awesome team as well! I’ve done plenty of tastings of the same cocktail with different rums side by side and nothing compares to Pusser’s.

Where do you find inspiration for your cocktails?

My wife bought me this book called The Flavor Bible quite some time ago. It pretty much goes through every flavor and tells you what pairs well with that specific flavor. I’ve always liked to bend the rules so I find myself always looking for odd ingredients that completely changes the way a certain cocktail is made.

Please tell me about your greatest accomplishment in relation to the spirits industry.

Being a photographer has helped to push me further into the spirits industry and to achieve more as a bartender. That being said, doing photography has helped me get to know the stories behind all of the spirits and cocktails that I get to work with and continue to build relationships within the industry!

What’s an interesting fact about yourself?

I love music. I’m the lead singer and guitarist in a band called Hearts Like Lions and I’ve had the privilege of travelling the country getting to do what I love.

Any advice for those aspiring to the be in the industry?

Hustle! As long as you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything. Continue to build relationships with those in the industry and just be you!
