Describe your experience in the bartending industry.
I have been bartending at Merchant House for a little over a year, progressing from floor staff to Assistant General Manager, and all the while keeping my finger on the pulse of the rum world. I’ve been lucky enough to get to know many key rum figures, and even helped to judge the 2019 World Rum Awards.
What’s your favorite aspect of Pusser’s Rum?
I’m nerdy enough to not only have a favorite rum-producing country, but even a favorite still, so the high Port Mourant content in Pusser’s Rum appeals to me greatly.
Favorite Pusser’s Rum cocktail and recipe?
For Black Tot Day, I decided to revisit an unusual favorite, the Rum Negroni, and used it to explore the international influence the Navy created for us. Pusser’s Gunpowder is stirred with a spicy Trinidad amaro (Angostura) and a modern English vermouth (Sacred), finished with a grapefruit zest (originally from Jamaica). Smoking the glass with matches is a throwback to a previous menu, and gives the drink a wonderful explosive aroma. This is a drink all about British international history and its pioneering future, served short and sharp enough to be a suitable tot for any sailor!
“The Gunpowder Negroni”
30 ml Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum
20 ml Amaro di Angostura
20 ml Sacred Spiced Vermouth
1 dash molasses bitters
Stir over ice and strain into a chilled coupe, smoked with 3 matches. Garnish with grapefruit zest.
